Inspired by ‘The Sons of Katie Elder’ (and its remake ‘Four Brothers’), ‘Big B’ shows us that with conviction and talent, we can make stylized movies having technical standards on par with the international, even with our low budget.
But alas! In their eagerness to make a technically proficient film in Malayalam, the makers forgot to add some basic elements that would have made it an all-round success. Having failing to do so, the film ended up as a movie for niche audience.
Bilal (Mammootty), Eddie ( Manoj.K Jayan), Murugan (Bala)and Bijoy (Sumit Naval) are Mary teacher’s (Nafisa Ali) four adopted sons, who went about with their life when they grew up, leaving her alone. Bilal is a professional bodyguard, Eddie runs a hotel, while Murugan is a film stuntman and Bijoy a student.
Eddie was the only one around to look after Mary teacher. One day she, a social activist, gets murdered. Thus the brothers return to avenge the death of their mother.
They soon realize that they have an uphill task ahead as the killer is none other than Kochi underworld’s don Saiyuppu (Sherveer Vakil). How the brothers get to him forms the core of the story.
You can go on and on about the visuals in the film. The director Amal Neerad, who himself is a renowned cinematographer, and the cameraman of the film Sameer Thahir, put their heads together to come up with some engrossing shots and never-before-see angles and colour shades.
But at the end of the day, camerawork, all the trendy outfits, the background score and the punch dialogues are just some of the factors that contribute to a films success. The climax and even the whole of second half couldn’t sustain the impact that first half created. Death of one the brothers, they way the villain was presented and the situations leading to climax were all abstractions of numerous preceding action films. So the film is not entirely a new experience.
Mammootty, the style icon, is at his best in western clothing. He also created the perfect look and body language to play a throughout brooding character. He chewed up screen space, reducing others to mere puppets. Only person who could match-up to him was Nafeesa Ali, who played her part brilliantly. Manoj K Jayan also came up with credible performance.
The background score was near perfect, making the visuals look even more intriguing. Songs are all big hits too.
